Supported area model

For a compatible planar roof at one pitch, sloping surface area equals horizontal plan area multiplied by the slope multiplier. A simple rectangular building 10 m by 8 m has plan area 80 m²; at 6/12 the compatible sloping surface is about 89.443 m².

For a symmetrical gable the combined plan projection of both planes equals the building plan area when the eaves and ridge assumptions match. A shed roof uses one plane over the same plan projection.

When to divide the job

Different pitches, additions and independently measured planes belong in separate labelled sections. Sum only sections represented by a supported simple plan area and stated pitch.

Hips, valleys, dormers, intersections and curved roofs are not silently approximated. Use measured supported sections or obtain a professional takeoff.

Area is not an order quantity

Geometric area excludes product-specific coverage, laps, patterns, breakage and waste. Pass the checked area to the material estimator and enter a coverage rate you can support.

These calculations describe geometry only. They do not size rafters or trusses, assess loads, approve a design, interpret building codes, specify cuts or fasteners, or guarantee material quantities.

Roof work can cause serious injury. Do not climb onto a roof merely to collect inputs. Prefer drawings, ground-level measurements, accessible interior information or dimensions supplied by a competent professional.

Inputs, units and calculation stages

Length and width describe the selected horizontal plan boundary. In dimensional modes, an optional overhang expands every plan edge before area is calculated. Direct mode accepts an already established horizontal plan area. Square units follow the chosen length system.

Select a supported form, identify the plan boundary, add any deliberate horizontal overhang, calculate plan area, derive the pitch factor and multiply. A simple symmetric gable has two planes, but their combined horizontal projection equals the rectangular building plan when both sides meet at the ridge.

Worked examples

Example A

A 10 m by 8 m gable with no overhang has 80 m² plan area. At 6/12, factor 1.118033989 gives 89.442719 m² combined sloping area across the two planes.

Example B

A 30 ft by 18 ft mono-pitch extension at 3/12 has 540 ft² plan area. Factor 1.030776406 gives 556.619259 ft². A main roof at another pitch belongs in a separate calculation or workbench section.

Errors, limits and responsible use

The simple models do not infer hips, valleys, dormers, chimneys, openings or intersecting plan shapes. Openings are not automatically deducted because product rules differ. Waste is never included here; apply it later in the material estimator.

Frequently asked questions

Are dimensions measured at walls or eaves?
They describe whichever plan boundary you intentionally choose; state it in the record. Overhang can extend wall dimensions to an eaves boundary.
Does gable mode double the building area?
No. The two half-plan projections combine to the full rectangular plan before the factor is applied.
Can it calculate a hip roof?
Only if reliable simple-plane plan areas are known separately. It does not infer hip geometry.
Should chimney openings be deducted?
Only when the product takeoff method supports that deliberate deduction.
Is waste included?
No. Geometry and material allowances stay separate.
