What the factor means

The multiplier is √(1 + ratio²), where ratio is rise divided by run. Multiplying a horizontal run by this factor gives the corresponding slope line. Multiplying compatible horizontal plan area by it gives the corresponding planar sloping area.

At 6/12 the ratio is 0.5 and the factor is 1.118033989. At 12/12 the factor is √2, approximately 1.414213562.

Compatibility matters

A single factor applies only where the whole measured plan surface has one stated pitch. It does not turn an irregular footprint into a complete roof takeoff and does not resolve hips, valleys or intersections.

Keep factors at full precision in calculation code. Tables are convenient checks, but rounded table values should not replace the engine for final totals.

These calculations describe geometry only. They do not size rafters or trusses, assess loads, approve a design, interpret building codes, specify cuts or fasteners, or guarantee material quantities.

Keep a record of the original measurements, unit system, selected mode and any adjustment. Recalculate independently before ordering material or making a construction decision.

Inputs, units and calculation stages

The slope factor is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose horizontal run is one. It has no unit. It converts a compatible horizontal line to slope length or a compatible horizontal plan area to planar surface area.

Convert the selected input to ratio, square that ratio, add one and take the square root. The expanded reference table is derived from the same engine, not a separate hand-entered lookup.

Worked examples

Example A

At 6/12, ratio is 0.5. Squaring gives 0.25; adding one gives 1.25; the square root is 1.118033989. A 20 m compatible run therefore corresponds to 22.360680 m of slope line.

Example B

At 35%, ratio is 0.35 and factor is 1.059481. Applied to a known 70 m² simple-plane projection, it gives 74.1637 m² before material allowances.

Errors, limits and responsible use

One multiplier cannot be applied across sections with different pitches. It cannot discover plan geometry, resolve intersections or turn an outside footprint into a complete takeoff. Reference-table figures are display-rounded and should not replace the full-precision calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a steeper roof have a larger factor?
Yes. More rise for the same run increases the hypotenuse.
Is the factor a percentage?
No. It is a dimensionless multiplier, always at least 1 for supported non-negative pitch.
Can one factor cover a dormer roof?
Only for a separately measured compatible plane at one pitch.
Why is a flat factor exactly 1?
With zero rise, the sloping line and horizontal run are identical.
Should I round the factor first?
No. Keep full precision through the calculation and round the final display.
